Friday Morning News from the Pits

LSX Drag Radial racer Steve Turley out of Dayton, Ohio brought his Camaro out for the weekend after running a personal best 3 weeks ago. Steve recorded a very impressive 7.44 and is hoping to reach deep into the 7.3x range this weekend. Steve’s car is backed by a LS2 engine with a single 106mm turbo to make some serious power.

Last Years LSX champion Steven Fereday is on the grounds today with an all new car. Josh Ledford of Late Model Racecraft just finished the flat black Firebird a few weeks ago and this weekend will be the first time the car meets the track. Steven and the team are looking to dip deep into the 7 second range and claim the car is capable of running in the 7.30 range. On the cars first full pass of the weekend Steven went 8.68 at 151 and change. The car is using a 408 Cubic Inch LSX engine with twin 76mm turbos and a power glide to set the power to the race track. This will be the car to keep your eye on all weekend.

Mark Kohler of Ohio Boys Racing brought his beautiful Orange Firebird to the track today to compete in the LSX Drag Radial Class. Mark uses a 447 Cubic Inch LSX engine with a single 106mm turbo to apply the power. The car was testing last week and ran a personal best of 7.76. The team is hoping to go far into the 7.60 range.

LSX Index racer Keith Berry is on the grounds today with his Satin Black Chevy Corvette. Keith has been testing lately only using Horsepower and no power adders. He managed to go 9.60 a few weeks back and plans to put 1 or 2 Nitrous Kits on the car for this weekends race. While it will be the first time putting nitrous through this fresh engine Keith believes that the car has the capability to run in the Mid 8 second range and is hoping to claim the record this weekend. You may want to keep an eye out for Keith Berry all weekend long.

More news from the pits

Jon Moyers a LSX shootout newcomer has brought his new aged Camaro down from Pennsylvania to see how well he can compete in the LSX All Motor Class. Jon has only testing running the 1/8 mile and is looking forward to seeing what the car can run out the back door. Jon is hoping for a high 8 second pass. Jon and Scott Fry built the car themselves with the help from some friends in a garage. The car is powered by a 440 LME short block. This team has been fighting consistency all year and hoping to solve the problems this weekend.

Paul Smith Jr. Brought his beautiful red Corvette to Memphis this weekend to compete in the Index class of this weekends LSX Shootout. While the car has been a best of 9.95 Paul is hoping that the cool air allows him to create the power for his 427 inch motor to run in the 9.80 range. Paul was testing last weekend and managed to run a best of 10.03. Paul built the car himself out of his garage and is hoping to close in on the competition.

Notes from testing

During the LSX shootout testing Ohio racer Steve Turley ran a 7.53 at 198mph. Turley set low E.T. for the test session while most other races struggled to get down the track. While Steve’s best E.T. is a 7.44 the team looks to better their times throughout the weekend.

Qualifying on its way

With testing over the sun is starting to fall, but unfortunately so is the rain. The rain is just slightly coming down and we have to go through a few Pro Classes before we get back to the LSX shootout. In testing many cars were having some problems but a few managed to get a handle on the cold track.
Racing is just getting back underway and round one of qualifying will be right up.

In the Pits

While most of the LSX shootout racers were packed up and gone from track by the time the official’s called off the race. Mike Meeks was hanging around the pits. Mike managed to run a 9.54 today with his brand new car. The car and engine are about three weeks old and have only been ran a few times. Mike was very pleased with the conditions of the track today while he had a few problems with his number 1 nitrous kit today he believes he has solved the problem and the car will be at the top of the field on Saturday.

Saturday morning news

Its Saturday morning and the sun is out, temps are cool and the cars are hooking. I decided to take a closer look at Flaco Gondalez’s sleek Chevy Silverado. The team is based out of Houston Texas and the car is brand new and has only been brought to the track a few times. The car has still not made a full pass down the ¼ mile but they are hoping to reach deep into the 8 second range today. Due too a head gasket malfunction the team was not able to make the first test session this morning but are working hard to make first round of qualifying. Flaco’s Truck is powered by a 414 Cubic Inch engine with a 106mm single turbo.

Qualifying Round 1

In the First round of LSX Drag Radial Qualifying Mark Kohler went straight to the top with a 7.68 at 187 mph. Kohler of Ohio has a beautiful Pontiac Firebird powered by a 447 ci LSX engine with a single 106mm Turbo. That pass was Kohler’s best by about a tenth and the team is hoping to better next round. Followed by Mark is Jim Filpowski who also ran his best yesterday with a 7.54 at 190 mph. This morning Filipowski managed a 7.89 at 7.92 to claim the second spot.

In LSX All Motor only 4 cars showed for first round of qualifying. Going straight to the number one spot was Jedson Massingilo with an 8.65. Followed by Massingilo was followed by Jon Moyer’s out of Pennsylvania with a 9.41. This is actually Moyer’s first quarter mile race and is hoping to put the car in the 8’s this weekend.

Saturday in the Pits

Driver David Lazear made the trip out to the LSX Shootout this weekend, David drove up from Florida and brought along his beautiful 4th Gen Camaro. While David is building a Big Cubic Inch motor back home at his CNC shop he brought along a customers engine this weekend for some testing. The combination was only finished a week ago and has very little testing on it. David has ran the quickest of 9.47 but looks to better with the track and air being so good.

Brian Lozano of Texas made the long haul this weekend to come and compete in the 10.50 Index class of the LSX Shootout. The teams car is powered by a 408 Cubic Inch Engine with no power adders. The N/A motor has been producing some serious power this weekend and has already went 10.45 and 126 mph. The team is very excited on the performance of the car and look to continue their success here this weekend.
