When the ’08-’09 G8 and 2010 Camaro’s hit the market they made a huge impact. Some of the new owners bought the car for a daily driver, a nice show car, and others took it down the drag strip. One style of build that is missing from that list is the pro-touring/autocross type.
Now the Camaro and the G8 are very well built machines that would do very well on the autocross course straight from the factory. Owners looking to be competitive with the top pro-touring cars are going to need to change a few things, mainly in the rear suspension. The stock lower control arms are somewhat flimsy and weak in different places. The same goes for the rest of the suspension for that matter. One company make efforts to improve these weak components is
Spohn Performance
Spohn has been busy making brand new suspension pieces for these cars the last few months. Take their control arms for example. Unlike the stock pieces, these control arms are fully boxed and gusseted for improved strength. There are four different gussets throughout the piece that run from top to bottom. Having strong lower control arms is important in a autocross application, because it will help reduce wheel hop and give you much better traction and handling. These cars also sit a little higher in the rear, so bringing the rear down to somewhat level will also help. These lower control arms have two mounting holes for the shocks. One that will leave it at the stock ride height, and the other will bring the ride height down 1 1/4”, but you can still keep the same full range of shock travel, and swap it back and forth to your liking.
Could you turn your G8 or Camaro into an autocross champ? With the amount of support from aftermarket companies like Spohn, the odds are in your favor.
