Yenko Camaro, A Fast Blast From The Past

If you are involved in high performance GM cars, then Yenko is a name that tops you’re all time GM power list. Don Yenko was a mastermind at making the GM sportscars competitive at the top series of racing. Yenko performance cars became known for their little show, but a lot of go. Sure there were a couple of stripes on the car and a simple Yenko badge, but it was what hid under the sheet metal that made the Yenko Camaros special.

This year’s SEMA show highlighted the Camaro, most predominately was the new 2010 Camaro. But tucked away in the OER booth was a tribute to one of the best known and loved Camaros of all time; a ’69 Yenko Camaro called the Road Rocket, built by D&P Classic Chevy. The Road Rocket project came from the 6th season of the cable TV program ‘Cut Chop Rebuild’. The idea behind the build was to make a new 1969 Yenko Camaro from the ground up with completely new parts, beginning with a brand new body from OER. The goal of the project was to maintain the Yenko classic design and appearance of the Camaro and integrate modern components into the build.

Modifications to the Camaro include a GM Performance Products LS7, 7.0 liter V8 engine with 500 + horsepower, a Keisler Engineering conversion on a Tremec T56 Magnum 6 speed transmission, Baer Brakes 6 piston brake calipers and 18 inch custom wheels with BF Goodrich tires. The rear end differential is a custom built Moser 12 bolt with posi-traction and 4.10 gears. Detroit Speed and Engineering products handle the suspension with components that include their state of the art Hydro-Formed front subframe with tubular control arms, coil over shocks, and rack and pinion steering. The rear suspension is a parallel four bar with coilover shocks and subframe connectors for strength.
