Amid the buzz, speculation, and constant rumors surrounding the Camaro Z/28, we finally seem to have some definitive answers. This weekend at the Carlisle Nationals, the people responsible for resurrecting the Camaro fielded all sorts of questions regarding the Camaro, including the possibility of a new Z/28.
Camaro5 was on hand, and can now hopefully put all the speculation to an end; yes, we will be getting a Z/28 Camaro, and yes, it will be awesome.
As reported earlier, the hood will indeed be coming off of “Bumblebee 2” from the recently released blockbuster “Transformers 2” Revenge of the Fallen”. The Z/28 will also get its own, unique grill treatment, though a Chevy bowtie will still be present (as though we need to be reminded). A hideaway-headlight grill? I can only hope. There will naturally be plenty of Z/28 badging across the car, and a high-output LS-series engine will provide power in excess of 500 ponies. This will finally give GM a viable GT500 fighter that isn’t the Corvette, something Chevy fans have needed for quite some time.
You and I will have to be patient however, as the Z/28 won’t be ready for market for a while still. First comes a convertible version of the Camaro in the spring of 2011. Not until the following year will the Z/28 hit the stage, and looking that far into the future can be a dangerous game.
The automotive landscape could be far different by then, and Ford is rumored to be returning the 5.0 to production, as well as ramping up the stock Mustang GT’s horsepower to comparable Camaro SS levels. Could the GT500 be beyond the Z/28 by the time it hits the road? Will the stringent gas mileage standards recently implemented by the Obama administration choke the Z/28’s power rating? Too much time to ask too many questions, so it is back to playing the waiting game for now.
